Welcome Letter from the Secretary-General
Honourable advisors and students,
It is our distinct pleasure to cordially invite you to the 5h annual session of ALMUN. ALMUN 2019 will be taking place from the 23rd until the 26th of May. This year’s conference will mark a significant moment for our conference’s brief yet vivid history. The sense of continuity and progress that has ensued in the context of ALMUN will once again yield fruit in the form of resolutions and experiences that are going to have a lasting impact on the society and community we wish to form.
Anyone who claims to understand the world with the entirety of its complexities either has a limited perspective or has an agenda to pursue off of that narrative. In 2018, each event that follows another proves again and again that the dynamics that were once taken for granted are from certain. The United States, after successfully executing a foreign policy agenda that remained consistent despite political strains within the country, changed course for the first time under Mr Trump’s agenda. Leaving the European Union was a proposition that had no support from the leaders of the two most influential parties in the UK, yet it succeeded and steered the country towards the dubious. China, the mounting economic force with remarkable GDP and HDI Index growth, is facing a serious challenge by the tariffs that are imposed upon it by the United States.
Our generation, quite literally, is faced with an immense task. The pre-existing norms and conditions are unravelling before our eyes, one after the other. Realistically speaking, designing a world from inception is not going to be possible with the consequential decision that has been made without our presence in the decision-making process. That, however, does not take into account the unusual sense of incoherence that has emerged as a result of these complicated times. The room for initiative in this particular time must encourage us to think because there is no other option but to innovate and reach a sustainable and realistic model for the future generations to follow. We must decide on a shared vision for the future and the world. Our individualised roles in enabling such a future to vary, but the contributions we are capable of making are enormous.
We believe that constructing a coherent and sustainable plan for the future starts at organisations such as ALMUN that quite literally embody what is admirable and noteworthy about the current generation. Located in the middle of what used to be the heart of trade and industry in the Ottoman Empire, the German High School has preserved the same mission and approach to education that has enabled its operation of over 150 years. Over the course of 150 years, our school has produced influential diplomats such as Richard Von Kühlmann (class of 1891) who served as the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Germany from 1917 to 1919 and Akif Cagatay Kilic (class of 1995) who served as Turkish Minister of Youth and Sports from 2013 until 2017. We are meticulous in the way this conference is planned and executed similarly to how each individual is educated and upbrought with our school’s philosophy. It is with unwavering confidence that we invite you to what will once again be a memorable and formative experience for each involved.
